Oahu Shave Ice

Welcome to the Oahu Shave Ice Review. The following is a review of the shave ice places I have personally been to in Honolulu and the rest of Oahu, Hawaii, the birthplace of shave ice. They are arranged by geographical area and are rated from small (junk) to extra large (excellent).

Note: If you don't understand what shave ice is, it is basically a sweet treat made from ice that is shaved by blades to a fine powder (thus "shave ice" - not "shaved ice), shaped together in a cone or bowl, and then various flavored syrups are poured on top. Other toppings can be added to shave ice including a scoop of vanilla ice cream at the bottom, or shaved li hing mui or evaporated milk, chocolate syrup, and even azuki beans on top. Shave ice is similar to "snow cones" but the ice is usually more fine, and the syrups more tasty. It is the de facto afternoon treat of choice in Hawaii.

Waiola Shave Ice

Two Locations
Location #1
Address: 2135 Waiola Ave, Honolulu
Phone: 808-949-2269
Rating: Extra Large

Location #2
Address: Kapahulu Blvd, Honolulu
Phone:
Rating: Extra Large

Review: This is probably the best shave ice place on the planet. The shave ice is so fine that the syrup almost immediately melts it so you have to eat it fast. Waiola's also has the most flavors and the most toppings of any shave ice place. Also look for their unique special creations including the azuki bowl and shave ice with Hersey syrup and evaporated milk. The Li Hing Mui and Lychee flavors are especially good. The original location on Waiola is the sentimental favorite, but the brand new location on Kapahulu across from the golf course is much easier to find. Either way, you can't go wrong.

Matsumoto Shave Ice

Address: 66-087 Kamehameha Hwy., Haleiwa, Hawaii (North Shore)
Phone: 808-637-4827
Rating: Large
Review: Matsumoto's is probably the most famous shave ice place in the world, and is listed in every tour book around -- and for good reason. The shave ice is fine, the selection of syrups large, and the portions are generous. It is definitely worth the stop when you are on the North Shore.

Island Snow

Two Locations: Address #1: Ala Moana Shopping Center, Honolulu
Phone #1: 808-943-0088

Address #2: Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, Waikiki, Honolulu
Phone #2: 808-924-3112

Rating: Medium
Review: Island Snow is an example of the new "commerical fast food" chain of shave ice places that lack the character of more traditional mom and pop stores. The shave ice tends to be a bit more coarse and the selection more limited.

Any additional places that I should know about and review? Please let me know by e-mailing me the name and address so I can check it out. Thanks.
