Los Angeles Dim Sum

Welcome to the Dim Sum Review for Los Angeles. The following is a review of the Dim Sum places I have personally been to in Los Angeles. They are arranged by geographical area and are rated from one (junk) to five (excellent) shu mai.

Note: If you don't know what Dim Sum is, it is basically a general term for a number of Chinese (actually Cantonese) dishes, usually served in small baskets that you order from passing carts in the restaurant. They can be either sweet or salty, simple or complex. A good Dim Sum restaurant will have not only good food, but a wide variety to choose from.

Chinatown

Empress Pavilion
Address: Chinatown Bamboo Plaza, 988 N. Hill St. Suite 201, Los Angeles
Phone: 213-617-9898
Rating: 2.5 Shu Mai

Review: Once considered the place to go for Dim Sum, Empress has slipped quite a bit in recent years. While the Dim Sum is still good, the waits are agonizing (up to 2 hours on a Sunday), the service is horible, and the carts meander around without any sense of logic. I once was there for an hour and only 3 carts passed by my table! My total for that sad meal was $6 for two people! There are a lot of better choices outside of Chinatown. Still, Empress is still the place for Dim Sum in Chinatown.

San Gabriel Valley

Ocean Star
Address: 145 N. Atlantic Blvd. Suite 201-203, Monterey Park, CA 91754
Phone: 626-308-2128
Rating: 4.5 Shu Mai

Review: Ocean Star serves perhaps the best Dim Sum in LA. The selections are numerous, the food is tasty, and the service is good. They also offer several unique items, so you can always be a little adventurous. Ocean Star is huge, noisy, and crowded, so you know it's authentic. Overall, a good choice.

NBC Seafood
Address: 404 S. Atlantic Blvd. Monterey Park, CA 91754
Phone: 626-282-2323
Rating: 4.0 Shu Mai

Review: Just down the street from Ocean Star is NBC Seafood, possibly the second best Dim Sum in LA. NBC is located in a small shopping center and the parking lot is full by 10am on any weekend. Its main attraction is its good service and wide selection. The dim sum is tasty. The wait is almost as long as Ocean Star so it pays to get there early.

South Bay

Regal Palace
Address: 2166 Pacific Coast Highway, Lomita, CA 90717
Phone:
Rating: 3.5 Shu Mai

Review: Regal Palace has the best Dim Sum in South Bay -- which isn't saying much. It is a bit pricey, but the food is generally good and the atmosphere is better than most Dim Sum places.

Sea Empress Seafood Restaurant
Address: 1636 W. Redondo Beach Blvd, Gardena, CA
Phone: 310-538-2620
Rating: 2.5 Shu Mai

Review: Sea Empress is a small Dim Sum restaurant that has been relatively average over the years. However, after a bad experience with the shrimp, and its lack of positive points, Sea Empress is mediocre at best.

Any additional places that I should know about and review? Please let me know by e-mailing me the name and address so I can check it out. Thanks.
